Performance

Contendro I’s performance career was brief but outstanding, highlights include: 1999 Holstein premium stallion; winner of the 2000 Adelheidsdorf stallion performance test (winning the index for jumping with a score of 147.29, and placing fourth in the dressage index with a score of 131.09); placed in the 2001 Holstein Riding Horse Championships; and he was nominated for the Bundeschampionate.

Because of heavy breeding demands he only attended a few shows, but he never went home without a ribbon.

Pedigree

Contendro I’s sire, Contender, is one of the world’s leading jumping sires. His notable offspring include the likes of Montender (Marco Kucher), individual European gold medalist 2005; Checkmate (Meredith Michaels Beerbaum), team gold WEG Kentucky 2010; and Carlo (Nick Skelton), individual European bronze medalist 2010. He can also be found in the pedigrees of the top stallions Chellano Z and Balou du Rouet.

Contendro’s dam, Bravo, is also the dam of the licensed stallions, Caretano Z (by Caretino), 1997 Reserve Bundeschampion, 1999 World Champion of 7-year old show jumpers, and a World Cup Finalist in Gothenberg, Sweden; Contendro I’s full brother Contendro II, her third licensed son; and her fourth, the Holstein Verband stallion, Cassito (by Cassiano). She also gave birth to Contendro’s full sister, BB Caretana, ridden by Niklaus Schurtenberger of Switzerland, a highly successful international show jumping mare.

Progeny

Contendro I is the only sire to have offspring competing and winning at the high levels they do in all three FEI disciplines. 5 times World N°1 in Eventing, 6 times in the top 25 in Jumping and was also ranked in the top 100 dressage.

Notable showjumpers winning at international level are Codex One, Caballito, Hello Annie, Holiday by Solitour, Contendra 22, Cinsey, Conthendrix. In eventing, Campino (Mark Todd), won the CIC3* in Ireland, and in dressage Condio B is European Young Riders Champion in Dressage with the German team and her rider Claire-Louise Averkorn. They also placed 5th individually.

More than 30 of his sons have been licensed so far. Captain Fire, from Contendro I’s very first crop, won the 2006 Bundeschampionate in the class for five year old jumpers. Charming Boy, the 2005 Champion Stallion of the Springpferdezuchtverband Oldenburg-International (OS) licensing, finished his performance test in 2006 in Neustadt/Dosse as Reserve Champion. Condiro also finished his performance test as Reserve Champion. Another son, Comte, placed second in jumping at his test, and Contendros Bube finished his test as Reserve Champion.

Contendro I’s daughters are no less impressive. Con Pleasure was the celebrated 2005 OS International Champion Mare, and the following year, her foal by Solitair sold at the 5th Oldenburg Elite Foal Auction in Vechta for a top price of 40,000 Euro. In 2006, Contendro I’s daughters dominated the free jumping competitions in Verden: Cascada, Catalina, and Cortina all took first place in the classes for four year olds. In 2005, a State Premium candidate mare named Corletta won the free jumping class for three year olds.

In the auctions, Contendro’s offspring are also exceptionally impressive. As of 2010, his offspring had sold for a total of 4.6 million Euro in Verden, the most ever for a jumper sire at the Hanoverian auctions. His son, Carlucci, sold for a top price of 280,000 Euro at the 2007 Hanoverian Spring Elite Auction, and Contendro’s son, Codex One, was sold for 170,000 Euro – the highest price at the 2004 Hanoverian Elite Auction. Both stallions have gone on to be successful in the show rings and as show jumping sires.
